In the Stoop Group's most recently accepted paper, the evolution of the mammalian cochlea is demonstrated to have been so strongly guided by the physics of small signal amplification that its final design was almost inevitable, and further, that this design naturally gives rise to the overall characterisation of complex sounds through pitch.
